Swing Weight
Is Not Your Club Weight

Swing weight is influenced by four things:

1. Club head weight
2. Weight of the grip
3. Length of the club
4. Weight of the shaft

And guess which one we change the most?

The first thing we as golfers do is change grips. You have just gotten your custom fit/built set and you were amazed at the difference in your game, and then all of the sudden your old game is back. First thing - you start looking for excuses and blaming the product now that the new has worn off. Just remember that one or two bad rounds does not mean that you have to start changing things, be honest with yourself - it's you, maybe stress at work, home or any of the other things your mind can come up with.

Guys the quickest way to loose the feel and really mess with your golf club is to put the wrong weight grip on the club just because you tried your buddies or you saw a new commercial. If you would like to have a different texture or feel on your grip go back to your club maker and let him/her help you, we'll try to give you the feel you want in your grip and keep it within 1 swing point change.

Swing weight is described as the weight relationship of a golf club as it is balance on a fixed fulcrum point, this point happens to be 14". Whether it is a driver or a wedge, that 14" is the standard in the industry. The more weight that is on the head end of the club - the more the higher the swing point will be, this is identified by a letter/number unit such as C-7, D-1, D-2 and so on. A swing point is equal to 2 grams (weight of a dime).

Without getting too techie on you - here is quick relationship to what happens when you change any of the four factors-

  • Add 2 grams to the golf head +1 swing point
  • Cut 1/2" off your shaft -3 swing points
  • Change grip weight by 5 grams -1 swing point
  • Change shaft weight by 9 grams heavier +1 swing point - but this is not etched in stone and in my opinion is least important in the calculating.

One point change is almost undetectable, some professional golfers can feel a two point difference, and most every day golfers can start to feel the difference after three or four points.

Swing weight is one of the most overused least understood terms in golf. Most of the time when a golfer tells me he wants a heavier swing weight - what he really wants is a heavier total weighted club - so it is all about feel.

Swing weight was fun - tell me about shaft flex.
