Don't Let Your Steel Shaft Maintenance Contribute to Slow Play
There is very little to be said about golf steel shaft maintenance. Steel shafts have been the backbone of the industry since the American Fork and Hoe Company started making this shaft in 1923 and later became True Temper. All your steel shafts need are a good wipe down after every round and that will minimize the pitting and rusting, especially on your shorter irons. The rust comes from us laying our clubs around the greens after we chip up to one putt (yeah right), most of us think it's the dew or where the sprinklers were on, when in reality its from the fertilizer, pesticides and other chemicals that are used around the course. Steel shafts are pretty durable and will take most any abuse you give them, they won't however stand up to wrapping your club around a tree. On the other hand, I have seen steel shafts break at the hosel, just below the grip, or like the one I had in the shop today, between the hands. All most everyone has the same answer when I ask them about their broken shaft, "I don't know all I did was hit the ball". Sometimes it is just old age and nothing to do with your steel shaft maintenance that cause your shafts to break. One of my good friends, we'll call him "Big Boy", is one of the best players I have ever seen and he has played against and beat some of the greats. On a par three he put a nice hosel rocket (shank) on his tee shot and being disgusted, he tossed his club towards his bag, he did not throw it, it landed head first, but the shaft snapped right at the first step. Good thing I kept a backup set in his specs at my shop, because it took me 7 weeks to get that 4 iron replacement taper tip shaft. So treat your babies to a good wipe down after each round, that's it for steel shaft maintenance. Just do me a favor and don't wipe them down while you're playing, there is no sense being a contributor to the slow play epidemic that seems to be the norm any more.
