Don't Use Your Wife's Toothbrush
for Iron Head Maintenance

For a start I want to take a look at iron head covers as part of your iron head maintenance, this is because I see a lot of you like the new iron head covers. I use them too when I travel, to keep the heads from dinging into my shafts, but I don't use them during play. You just don't have the time to clean your grooves completely. Wiping them off with a towel helps but by putting your iron covers back on all you are doing is scratching the finish of your clubs. All the sand and crud that's in the grooves will vibrate loose and cling to your iron covers - and before you know it, you are sanding and etching your club heads every time you take the covers on and off.

So put them on after your round is over, it does not take that long to clean out the grooves and wipe down your heads, and as an extra bonus your ball will check the next time you pitch up on the green. A good way to clean the groves on your heads is soap, water and a brush, there are several products on the market, and they all do a good job. I would however suggest not using your wife's toothbrush for your iron head maintenance, it tend to upset her and it will seriously cut into your playing time both on the course and at home.

If your clubs are so built up with dirt and grass that you have to soak them for a long period of time just to get them clean, you need to revisit your iron head maintenance and probably your complete golf club maintenance techniques. By the way, there is nothing legal you can put on your heads to keep the dirt from sticking so don't even go there.

Also, for forged and soft stainless steel heads, it would be a good idea to take them to your club fitter at least once a year for a golf club maintenance tune up. He or she will need to check each club for accurate loft and lie. Unfortunately all the other cast heads cannot be adjusted and are only as good as the original fitting.
