Why Does Graphite Shaft Maintenance Include
Not Keeping My Golf Clubs in the Trunk?

Think this way about graphite shaft maintenance - don't put your golf clubs in a place or situation where you would not be comfortable. I see a lot of guys put their golf clubs in the trunk of their car and keep them there, you know "just in case". Well it gets mighty hot in that trunk in the summer time and I know if you are like me the sticks do not go in the bottom of the trunk. We wedge them in on top of all the other necessities we golfers have to carry. That would be the extra shoes, rain gear, pull cart - even though we ride - enough golf clubs that we could start a yard sale, and yes we have got to have a cooler. Like I said it gets hot in that trunk and if your graphite shafts are bent in any way they will form a memory and one day you will comeback to me and tell me that you can't hit your club anymore and you have lost distance - well you cooked it.

Not only did the flex change (most of the time softer) but also it is no longer in FLO (Flat Line Oscillation). Sometimes I can break down the club and re-spine it, but most of the time you will just continue to play and wonder why your scores are not getting any lower. If you have cooked your shafts but love the heads - then reshaft or you can use it as a good excuse to buy a new set of custom fit clubs.

And do yourself a favor, keep your head covers on your clubs (woods), some of you think that it is to protect the nice paint job on your heads. I have been told, "it does not matter what they look like". If you are guilty of this, stop right now. Remember, graphite shaft maintenance, go look at your clubs, especially at your shafts, see all the nicks on your shafts? That's from your shorter clubs banging against your shafts - and they will break. So take your clubs out of the trunk if you are not playing that day and keep your wood heads covered.

Other than that, your graphite shaft maintenance consists of just wiping them down with soap and warm water.
