What makes a set of golf irons -
are wedges included?

Good Question, if you believe everything you hear and see advertised, a set of golf irons consists of 3-PW. Some companies do offer 4-PW & SW, with the rest of the wedges costing extra. It has always baffled me why we are forced to buy clubs that most of us cannot hit very well, such as the 3 & 4 iron.

When I ask why you have a three iron in the bag, countless times I have been told, "I use it to punch out of the trees". Well then don't hit it into the woods, yes I know it's going to happen, but don't plan for it. What the mind will plan for - the body will deliver. A set of golf irons is anything you choose to make it - whether it's a half set 3, 5, 7, 9, PW - or my favorite 6-PW, AW, SW, LW.

When I fit and build your new set of golf irons I would rather give you scoring clubs. I do not want you to pay for two or three clubs that you don't use and still make you have to buy the wedges separately. Don't get me wrong I will fit you for a 3 or 4 hybrid club to complete your arsenal, but just like in everything else it has to fit you or it will not work.

I just had a golfer come in with this year's latest and greatest set of clubs to adjust the lie angle for him (you know the ones - their colors are blue and white). The reason that I am mention this is twofold -

First - he told me several times what a good deal he got at the his local course, yet he paid me to set the lie angle because they did not have a way to adjust his clubs.

Second - he told me that he would take the 3 & 4 iron out of the bag because he can't hit them, and he will put his hybrids in the bag. And he still didn't have any wedges.

Of course this golfer ordered the muscle backs when a cavity back or an over-sized cavity back would have worked so much better for him. I simply cannot understand why in this day age anyone would still play a very unforgiving club. Even the guys you see on TV every week have gone to a more forgiving club.

So somebody tell this dumb old club maker - where was the good deal?

The new trend is to offer hybrid club sets, and every manufacturer has jumped on the band wagon, some sets are 3 & 4 Hybrid, 5-6-7 hollow back and 8-9-PW cavity back, others are hybrid all the way through the wedges. We as professional club fitters have been offering progressive and mixed sets for years. There are no rules, a set of golf irons can have any makeup as long as they fit and a custom fit can make you a better golfer.
