If Your Golf Grip Doesn't Slip Your Golf Scores Dip!
While the shaft is the most important part of your club the golf grip runs a close second, it is the only place you have contact with your golf club. If your grips don't feel right, are not the right size, are slick or have worn spots, you do not have control and you are leaving shots out on the course. There are three types of grips not counting putter grips:
- taper
- parallel
- reverse taper grip
These come in:
- wraps
- velvet
- crossline
- chord
- half-cord
You can get the above as:
- regular firm(whatever that is)
- firm
- extra-firm
- soft
There are a combination of materials - rubber, synthetic and multi-compound. And, yes you still can get true leather in a grip - mostly in a slip on form. Do you like your grips round or with a reminder (a rib at the bottom to help with the alignment of your hands). Confused yet - wait there is more. What size do you need? Do you need - - undersize(-1/32")
- standard
- mid size(+1/16")
- oversize(+1/8")
or any size in between. Sadly in this day and time cost is also factor. Grip technology has come a long way since leather grips, and as I said above the norm now is a rubber, synthetic or a multi-compound, multi-texture grip, but its still about what feels right to you. You have to decide what feels right, but a custom club fitter can tell you what size is right for you. I often see golfers with the wrong size grip, and once again it will cost you strokes. Keep your grips clean, a big part of grip maintenance, and they should last you a season. If you play two - three times a week then odds are you should change them more often.
