Important Questions to Ask
Your Custom Club Fitter

Let me start by telling you who or what is not a custom club fitter.

Anyone offering to fit you over the Internet - here's a clue fast/average/slow or high/average/low is not custom fitting.

A $10 per hour plus commission sales person - having you hit into a video screen on their tweaked computers so you can buy that custom fit club that they just happened to have on the wall.

SIDE NOTE: You have no idea how many times I have had customers walk in and ask me to check that new driver they just bought at the MegaGiggaHumongous Box Store because they were hitting it 290yds+ in the store. We would go out onto the driving range and they struggled to hit it 230yds (not that there is anything wrong with that). But they did have that overpriced latest and greatest club in their bag and visions of miraculous drives to impress their buddies.

A"fitter" that took the 4-hour (cut and glue, and put on a grip) class on the weekend.

A"fitter" that will not listen to you.

You are willing to spend your hard earned money so ask him/her to show you some certification or accreditation.

Talk to the fitter get to know him/her. That person could be the greatest custom club fitter in the world (that would be me) but if your personalities clash (this could be me too) you will not be happy with the end results. This game is hard enough - so when you do make a bad swing or have an off day - you do not need a set of clubs that come with ready-made excuses.

Once you are confident in your fitter start to ask some tech questions such as:

  • How do you determined shaft flex - is it other than club head speed?
  • What length is right for me?
  • Which club head is right for me?
  • What should my swing weight be?
  • Would MOI (moment of inertia) with progressive swingweight be better than same swing weight thru out the set?
  • Are my clubs in FLO (flatline oscillation?
  • Are they frequency matched?
  • Is the grip the right size for me?

If you are still speaking to each other and no one is upset with all the questions then you have found yourself a keeper. Listen and learn - together you will build a set of clubs that will not end up on ebay or tucked away in the corner of the garage. Your new golf clubs should allow you to "hit it where they mow" more often.
