Building Golf Clubs
Not as Easy as 1-2-3

Here are a few things you will need to start building golf clubs.

  • A source for quality components. If you start with junk you will end up with junk. Do yourself a favor buy at least a 304 stainless grade of iron heads. Also, I have always tried to avoid any driver head that had the word Matrix in it because I have not found one that performed as promised.
  • A way to cut shafts - both steel and graphite. If you just follow tip-trimming charts stay current with the MFG specs.
  • A swing scale ($80)
  • A club length ruler ($49)
  • Some sort of club holding clamp mounted on a vise.
  • If you are going to frequency match the set you will need an analyzer ($500)
  • If you are going to weigh heads and build a matched set whether swing weighted or MOI - a digital scale ($50) is a must. You have to know how much the heads weigh.

That's all the big stuff - you still need lead weights, ferrules, epoxy, grip tape, grip solvent, and grips. All this adds up in a hurry and can run into $$$.

Your best bet is to buy shop kits - these prices came right out of popular component catalog.

  • A total shop set-up kit is $781.
  • A club assembly kit is $141.
  • A reshafting kit is $550

The above shop kits for building golf clubs do not include a frequency analyzer, club bending machine or any of the different gauges and fitting systems needed to build a matched set of clubs. I have over $10K invested in just extras that help me give a proper fitting that in turn will give you a set of custom built clubs that will last.
